E-commerce sales are rising — as is consumers' environmental awareness. Consumers are placing higher demands on the quality of products and packaging than ever before. Of course, this presents some challenges — but it also creates opportunities, and we want to shed some light on them for you. In this post, we will tell you, among other things, how you can turn consumers' increasing environmental awareness to your advantage.
Packaging is important as it is more than just wrapping or protecting your product. Your packaging choice and design actually has a big impact on your brand and sales.
Think of your packaging as an extension of your brand: it is highly relevant that your packaging corresponds to your company's values, as your packaging must help sell your products. When your products are sold online, consumers do not have the opportunity to meet your products physically. The job of your packaging is to make consumers want to own your product.

Every year, the Danes trade goods for DKK 174 billion on the web. The many goods that are shipped are packed in huge quantities of packaging, which puts a strain on the environment. At the beginning of 2020, the government launched an initiative to provide more knowledge about how we can get more sustainable packaging in e-commerce.
The growth of e-commerce requires an increasing focus on sustainability in the packaging area, as large quantities of packaging from online commerce are discarded every day. It is therefore relevant to consider how to create an e-commerce packaging solution that is environmentally friendly.
If you want to develop more sustainable packaging for your products, it's a good idea to consider the materials you use.
Internet giant Zalando has a vision for 2020. They will replace all packaging materials with environmentally friendly materials that are 100% recyclable. In the future, the e-commerce company will therefore only use recyclable cardboard packaging. In addition, Zalando will phase out all of their plastic bags and replace them with paper bags.
In 2018, Coleman Parkes Research conducted a study on packaging that has some interesting findings.
In recent years, the media has focused heavily on how plastic packaging pollutes the world's oceans, and this has had an impact on Europeans. 74% of Europeans say media coverage of packaging waste has had an impact on their buying habits.
The study also shows that 75% of European consumers say that sustainable shipping packaging has an impact on their purchasing decision.
Consumers are becoming more and more environmentally conscious, and they are demanding more sustainable products than ever before. Consumers demand environmentally friendly products and packaging, so companies can use a sustainable profile to their commercial advantage. Sustainability sells, so if you have created environmentally friendly product content in sustainable packaging, remember to tell consumers! In this way, you are doing both the climate and yourself a favor. We've gathered a few tips on how to make your packaging more sustainable and how you can educate your (potential) customers about it:
Sustainable materials — Use recyclable materials and communicate it through the packaging design. Consumers are interested in how environmentally friendly your packaging is, and they need to be able to easily access the information. If your packaging is made from recycled plastic, you can write “100% recycled plastic” and thus capture the attention of consumers.
Environmental certifications “A survey conducted by Epinion for the Danish Environmental Protection Agency shows that every second consumer looks for environmental labels and the company's environmental profile when choosing a product.
Use colors, motifs, illustrations, etc., that draw attention to the environment — A simple design, the color green and illustrations of leaves are all elements that prove that your packaging is sustainable.
