Plastic in the ocean is a big problem. Over the past 50 years, the production of plastics has increased sharply. In fact, production has doubled since 1964 and we need to act now if we are to slow this trend. It is expected that by 2050, 1.244 million tons of plastic will be produced annually.
Every year, more than 8 million tons of plastic are discharged into the world's oceans. That equates to over 15 tons per minute. The service life of plastic in nature is up to several hundred years. For example, a plastic bottle can live 450 years in the marine environment. It will slowly fragment into smaller pieces, to eventually end up as microscopic pieces that never completely disappear. This means that all plastic ever produced still exists in one form or another.
With the increased focus on plastic in the sea, a number of brands have introduced products made from plastic waste from the sea. Kevin Murphy is the first beauty brand to introduce packaging that is made from 100% plastic waste from the ocean. The picture below describes the process when using plastic waste from the sea to produce new goods.

Plastic in the ocean is of great importance for the animals that live in the marine environment. Over 90% of all seabirds have pieces of plastic in their stomachs. In addition, one in three species of marine mammals has been found entangled in debris. The sea turtles are at risk as they eat gophers. They may come to confuse a plastic bag with a goppel. As a result, more than half of the world's sea turtles have eaten plastic.
It is not in the oceans that the solution to the problem is found. Ocean cleanups alone cannot solve the problem if we continue to dump plastic into the oceans. In turn, you can consider what materials you choose for your packaging. Use as little plastic as possible in your packaging if you want to help make a difference. Make sure the materials are as recyclable as possible.
