Polyethylene plastic (PE) is one of the most common and versatile plastic types, widely used in daily life and industry. Polyethylene is thermoplastic polymer that is produced by polymerization of ethylene molecules. This type of plastic is known for its versatility, durability and economic benefits. There are two main types of polyethylene: low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
HDPE is known for its shape stability and is used in products such as tubs, pipes and bottles. Conversely, LDPE is more tough and flexible, ideal for plastic bags, bottles and carton coating. Other variants such as VLDPE, LLDPE, MDPE, and UHMWPE also have their unique properties.
Molecular order and density are determining factors. Low density means branched molecules, which provides increased flexibility, while high density means linear molecules and thus strength and rigidity. This affects what each variant can be used for.
Low-density variants such as LDPE and LLDPE are used for flexible products such as food foil and plastic bags. Their toughness and low weight make them ideal for these purposes. High-density variants such as HDPE and UHMWPE are used for strength-intensive applications such as boxes, drums and transport tanks.
