What is packaging — and why is it important in the cosmetics industry?

We see it everywhere. On shelves, in drawers, in bags and parcel post. Packaging. But what does that actually mean? And what does that mean specifically in an industry like cosmetics, where form and function play together with both branding and safety? Many people who start developing their own products start with a focus on the content. But quickly the question arises: How should it be presented?

Packaging is more than just a container

Packaging is what surrounds the product — but it is also what protects, communicates and sells. In the world of cosmetics, packaging plays a crucial role, both when it comes to storage and the feeling that the product should give. It should keep the contents clean and safe, provide proper dosage, and at the same time create the right experience. We often say that the packaging is the outward face of the product — and this is very true here.

Consumers are taking notice

You don't have to be a branding expert to know that the first thing you see matters. When people choose between two products on a shelf -- or in a webshop -- packaging is the first filter. It tells something about quality, style and identity. And increasingly also about responsibility. Several are asking: Is it sustainable?, Can it be recycled?, Where is it made?. Therefore, it is no longer enough for the packaging to “just work” — it must also convey your values.

Producer responsibilities and rules — you need to know

When you sell cosmetics in Denmark and the EU, you as a manufacturer are responsible for ensuring that the packaging meets the regulations. This applies to materials, labelling and the environment. Here come concepts such as the packaging regulation and producer responsibility into the picture. You need to be able to document what your packaging consists of, how it is labelled and, in some cases, how it should be disposed of. It may sound heavy, but with the right collaborators, it's affordable.

Packaging is not just form — it's also responsibility

Choosing packaging is no longer a detail. It's part of product development, part of the brand and part of your responsibility. In the cosmetics industry, it is often the packaging that creates the first impression — and therefore it is also where you have a chance to show who you are and what you stand for. Make it simple, transparent and honest. That's what customers remember.
