Packaging for hair products

What should you remember when designing packaging for hair products? We elucidate that in this post. We have made a three-point list of some elements that are important to consider when developing packaging for hair products:

  • What type of product are you dealing with?
  • What viscosity does your product have?
  • How much should customers spend on your product?

Packaging for the right hair product type

Is your product a shampoo, conditioner, hair oil or something completely fourth? Your product type is crucial to your packaging choice.

Products such as shampoos and conditioners must have a packaging that can withstand getting wet constantly, as these products often have a fixed place in the shower cabin.

It does not have a hair oil - typically used in towel-dried hair - namely, it does not need to have an equally water-repellent packaging. Here, instead, it is important that the packaging is frosted so that sunlight does not penetrate and possibly spoil the contents of the product.

Viscosity of your product

It is important to consider the viscosity of your product, as it also has an impact on your packaging choice. If your product is very liquid, it may not need to be filled into a tube where too much can easily flow out, dispensing the product. If you are going to pack a dry hair cure, it is most convenient to fill the product in a jar, for example, so that it is easy for the consumer to dose the amount.

A bottle with an associated capsule can also be used for many of the hair products used in the bath, i.e. shampoos, conditioners, hair cures, etc. The capsule is good for products that are not too easily liquid, but on the contrary have a higher viscosity.

How much of your product should the consumer spend per time? If your product has a high viscosity and is very dry, your packaging does not need to be able to contain as many ml. If the consumer needs to use an amount of your product that corresponds to the size of a pea, and the product needs to be used a couple of times a week, you should choose a packaging in a smaller size.

If your product has a lower viscosity and a lot of product needs to be used per use, your packaging should have room for several ml. In other words, there must be consistency between the appropriate dosage and the size of the packaging.

Packaging for shampoos and conditioners

There are a lot of different types of shampoos and conditioners on the market. You can get hair care products for dry, damaged, dyed, worn or thin hair, etc. In addition, the product comes in many different price ranges, as some brands compete on price, while others have a greater focus on quality and design. Many consumers have both shampoo and conditioner standing in front of their bathroom, as the products must be easily accessible when they are used. Packaging, design and brand therefore play a role in the consumer's choice of shampoo and conditioner. When products have a visible location in the home, they help to reflect the consumer's lifestyle and buying habits. Packaging for hair oil

Hair oil has a different viscosity than shampoos and conditioners, which is why it is necessary to package the product in a different way. Hair oil often has a more or less liquid consistency, which, however, can vary in “thickness”. Some hair oils are almost completely thin liquid, while others have a higher viscosity. Hair oil is often applied after a bath in towel-dried hair, and therefore the product does not necessarily stand in the shower cabin, as shampoos and conditioners do. Hair oil is often placed in a closet or on a shelf so that it is easily accessible after a hair wash. The product is a beauty and personal care product, which is why it is essential to conceive an appealing packaging design. The product is in the nice-to-garden category, and therefore it should feel like a luxury for the consumer to use hair oil. This applies to both product content and packaging design. The design should be user-friendly and visually appealing, so that the consumer gets a good overall impression of the product.

Viscosity of a hair oil and its packaging

To create a good packaging design, it is essential that you choose the right packaging for your product and its viscosity. It is enormously stressful when a packaging for a hair oil is leaking, as oil is a greasy product. Therefore, first of all, it is important that your packaging is tight. In addition, it is essential that the packaging is user-friendly. If the product is very liquid, it is not advisable, for example, to fill it in a bottle with a capsule, since it can be difficult to control the dispensing by this type of packaging, and a product with a low viscosity. Instead, it may be a good idea to choose a packaging with a pump that doses the amount of product for the consumer.
