Introduction to the ABC of Packaging on the design and development of sustainable packaging

Why is it important that we talk about packaging design and packaging development?

Over time, sustainability has become not just a volatile trend, but one that is very relevant to the packaging industry and the future in general.

Consumers have become much more environmentally conscious and there is an ever-increasing expectation that products are produced with care for the environment.

That is why we at Packwise have set out to develop an extended guideline for the different stages that one must go through in the packaging design and development process, and what considerations can be included in the process from the beginning. We call it the ABC of packaging.

Today, the focus of packaging should not only be on function and production value.

With the sustainable approach, it is important that we think about the entire product lifecycle - and with that said, even several product life cycles are thought out from the first considerations when developing packaging.

Get a sustainable packaging design

In the development of packaging design, it is very much about function and the functionality of the product as a whole. But when we add sustainability, it is also important to focus on what choices you make in relation to your packaging. It is both about the option and the choice, as well as the quantities of the different materials and types of materials.

In addition to focusing on the choice and quantity of materials in its packaging, it is also relevant to consider the composition of the packaging materials. For the same reason, it is important to consider how sustainable one's packaging design should be.

  • Should it be included in waste sorting?
  • Should it be reusable or reusable?
  • What is the optimal purpose of the materials when the product has served its primary purpose?

Get the right start on your design

When developing and designing packaging, there are several stages to go through - sustainable or not. From the very beginning, you should think about:

  • Visual identity, including colors, typography, labels, prints, and secondary packaging.
  • Materials and quantity of material types.
  • Functionality and the function of packaging.
  • Other purposes - should the packaging and materials be recyclable or reusable?

Ask yourself these questions before you start:

  • Which packaging material best suits my product content?
  • Is sustainability a theme of my brand and should it be incorporated into the packaging?
  • What are the stylistic and visual factors that I want to incorporate into the packaging design?
  • What message and signal does my packaging send about my brand?
  • Does a secondary packaging add value to the consumer's experience of the product and my brand?

At Packwise, packaging design starts with a thorough brand analysis with field and desk research to best develop products that match the brand's personality.

We examine the DNA of the brand and uncover who the product should address. In addition, we find the USPs (Unique Selling Points), ESPs (Emotional Selling Points) and claims that are important to communicate through the packaging design.

Designing and developing sustainable packaging can be complex

At Packwise, we know how difficult it can be to work with packaging development and especially sustainable packaging.

Therefore, in the coming posts, we will try to account for the different processes of such development - from the first thought to production, consumption and recycling.

The design process is an important part of the development of a product, as one has the opportunity to transform a standard packaging into one's own individual and personal packaging solution.

But the overarching topic is circular economy. There is no point in us, as both consumers and producers, using packaging only once. This is both bad for the climate and for the economy.

We can start early in the process by thinking carefully before producing packaging.

In this way, we ensure that it can be part of the circular economy and create the basis for sustainable production.

Together we can ensure sustainability and not least recyclability throughout the entire process when we produce packaging, which is why in future posts we will introduce the different stages that packaging is taken through as part of the circular mindset.

It is in the further posts on packaging and material types that we touch on the specific elements and processes in the development of packaging as well as the packaging cycle, including production, consumption and where the products end up.
