In the development of a sustainable packaging It is important to focus on material selection and quantity. Sustainable packaging design depends largely on these two factors.
Traditional materials such as plastics (which cannot be recycled) and other non-degradable materials are in many cases being replaced by more environmentally friendly alternatives. For example, it can be glass or recyclable plastic (PET). If possible, the amount of resources to be used to produce the packaging should be reduced. However, it is important that the packaging maintains the same level of protection as before.
Sustainability and recycling have become megatrends across many industries. Consumers have become much more environmentally conscious, and they are more likely than ever to expect products to be produced and packaged with care for the environment.
Sustainability has therefore become an important buzzword within the packaging industry. For the same reason, it is important to consider how sustainable your packaging design should be.

In addition to focusing on the choice and quantity of materials, it is also relevant to consider the composition of packaging materials. Waste is gradually being sorted in many households in Denmark. It is therefore essential to put together packaging materials in a way that makes it easy for the consumer to sort them out as waste afterwards.
This helps both the consumer and the environment, as the risk of some materials ending up in the wrong waste container is reduced. Packaging that is not properly sorted is inherently less recyclable than properly sorted packaging. However, packaging does not have to consist solely of one material.
There are, for example, several varieties of plastic that are extracted from crops, for example. They can be combined with sustainable barrier materials, which is why the overall packaging can be disposed of as plastic. A good mix of packaging materials can therefore help create a sustainable packaging design.
Sustainability is not a fleeting trend — on the contrary, the trend will continue to become more relevant in the packaging industry.
