Overpackaging

Overpackaging is a key issue — especially when we think about the environment and sustainability. As a packaging company, we know the importance of good and reliable packaging. Many products simply need protection in the form and packaging in order to be delivered to the consumer safely. But what happens when products that don't need packaging are packaged?

Sustainability and over-packaging

Especially in the food industry, many products are still covered in plastic, whether necessary or not. A walk through any supermarket will make you realize how much plastic is on the shelves.

Packaging organic products can seem paradoxical — especially from a sustainable perspective. But how do you really think about sustainability in terms of food packaging? We see two sides of the same case. Firstly, packaging is often made of plastic, which we know is very damaging to the environment. On the other hand, packaging helps to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables in particular. The packaging helps to retain the water that the goods give off. Fruits and vegetables continue to respire after it has been harvested. To slow down the respiration process, care must be taken to ensure that there is a low oxygen level in the packaging. To extend the shelf life, packaging is necessary. Without the packaging, food waste would grow as so many fruits and vegetables would be discarded. In addition, the law requires a distinction to be made between conventional and organic goods. The easiest way to do this is by packaging.

LOOSE market

LØS market is a 100% organic and package-free store that offers the consumer a green shopping experience. All their goods are sold in bulk, which means that the LOOSE market does not cause unnecessary waste. As an alternative to the disposable packaging in which many fruits and vegetables are packed, LOOSE market offers packaging that can be used again and again. They have organic cotton bags, glass jars and patent bottles. For the jars and bottles, they have a pledge system. LOOSE market is one of the companies that has taken up the fight against over-packaging.

But what about food waste? LOOSE market points out that the consumer only buys what is necessary when there is an opportunity to choose the exact number of fruits and vegetables that one wants. In addition, the price of the 'tired' fruits is reduced, making it more attractive for the consumer to buy them. 20% of all purchased food is thrown away — and the LOOSE market is trying to combat this.
