On 1 January 2025, the extended producer responsibility for packaging will enter into force in Denmark. This exciting initiative has already been adopted in several European countries and from 2025 will now also include Denmark. In this blog post you can read more about the initiative and how it affects you and your packaging material choices.
Extended producer responsibility (UPA) is a policy measure requiring producers to take increased responsibility for the products and waste they introduce into the market. In the case of packaging, this means that manufacturers must assume responsibility for the packaging lifecycle, including the collection, recycling and disposal of packaging waste.
The aim of the initiative is to minimise the negative impact of packaging waste on our environment. UPA for packaging creates incentives for manufacturers to design more environmentally friendly packaging and promotes recycling and recycling.

UPA has been shown to have a positive impact on the reduction of packaging waste while promoting circular economy. An example is Germany, who have had great success with their UPA system. According to a report by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the recycling rate of packaging in Germany has increased significantly as a result of UPA.
Manufacturers have been motivated to use recyclable materials and design packaging that is easy to disassemble and recycle. The result is a more sustainable and resource-efficient packaging industry

One of the benefits of UPA is that it creates incentives for manufacturers to think long-term and invest in research and development of new technologies for recycling and recycling. By placing responsibility on manufacturers for the packaging lifecycle, incentives for innovative and sustainable solutions are created. This could lead to the development of more environmentally friendly packaging materials and processes that reduce resource consumption and waste volume.
By making producers financially responsible for packaging, the incentive to reduce waste and increase recycling is strengthened. This creates incentives for manufacturers to work with local authorities, packaging manufacturers, recyclers and consumers to establish efficient collection systems and infrastructure for handling packaging waste. The result is more efficient and sustainable waste management that benefits both the environment and society.
For all companies selling packaged products with their own content, they must be registered in the country's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system. If you sell products on sales platforms such as eBay and Amazon, you must also be registered in the national systems. If this is not complied with, one will be removed from the platform in question.
For you as a business owner, this means that you need to make more informed choices when choosing materials for your packaging. It is important to consider recyclability, recycling potential and environmental impact when choosing packaging materials.
One of the sustainable choices you can make is, for example, to choose recycled plastics made from recycled plastic waste rather than new plastics. By using recycled plastic, you reduce the need to produce new plastic material and thus reduce the environmental impact.
When choosing packaging materials, it is also important to think about labeling and sorting. Make sure your packaging is clearly labeled to ensure transparency.
