In the fourth post in the series on ABC of Packaging, we review your many options when developing and designing personal care and cosmetics packaging. The various posts should equip you to be able to make decisions about which visual elements to include in your packaging design.
It is extremely relevant to consider every part of your design, as your packaging is much more than just your product's content packaging.
Your packaging must be functional and eye-catching so that it can capture your customer's attention.
At the same time, your packaging is very important for your brand's visual identity, and it is therefore essential what visual elements you want to incorporate into your design.
In our series, such as the design and development phase, we have reached the choice of materials, for your packaging, as it is of great importance for the sustainable profile. The focus in this post will be on the four plastic types PET, PE, PP and PLA, as well as metal and glass.
First of all, it is essential to choose the right materials. Not only for the sake of functionality, but also to support the expression of identity. For example, if you are developing and marketing a natural skincare line with fragrance-free, organic products, it may be a good idea to choose materials that match the message of the series.
In such a case, biobased, biodegradable or recyclable materials can be selected in the composition of either primary or secondary packaging.
For example, several cosmetic brands with that type of identity and DNA are seen using wooden, cardboard or paper parts to visually draw attention to and support a natural or organic approach to cosmetics and personal-care products. It can also be in the choice of PP or PE plastic for industrial packaging, which you can read more here.
At Packwise, we manufacture packaging in most sustainable plastic materials, as well as packaging in glass and paper, etc.
We ourselves are advocates of - and are generally seeing increasing customer interest in the recyclability of conventional packaging materials that enable sustainable solutions.

Below you will find the advantages and characteristics of a number of selected plastics typically used for primary packaging:
PET
PE
PP
PLA
Metal is especially used for cream jars or for bottle lids. Metal can also be recycled, but requires a lot of energy during this process. However, it does not require as much energy as the production of new metals. If you have a desire to get your cosmetic or care product the swan mark, it is necessary to consider the requirements for the metal content:
Glass is also a popular and frequently used packaging. It is a resistant material, the quality of which does not deteriorate from reuse and recycling. However, the production of glass requires a lot of heat and therefore a lot of energy, so it is tough against the climate. In addition, glass packaging has the disadvantage that it is not break-proof.
It is not just the material that needs to be decided when designing packaging. In our previous post, we talk about how the design of the packaging also has a big impact on the final product. Color selection, label, print and typography are important factors for the design.
In this series on ABC of Packaging, you can read much more about colors as a design element and share knowledge and inspiration for color selection of packaging, text style, profiling in the form of printing and label as well as much more, and in the next post we will touch on types of packaging.
